Maths
At Ayresome Primary, our approach to teaching Mathematics is rooted in fostering a deep, lasting understanding of mathematical concepts for all students. Using the White Rose Maths framework, we embrace a “Mastery” approach, which prioritises a comprehensive grasp of mathematical ideas over rote memorisation.
White Rose Maths Framework
White Rose Maths is a well-respected program that structures learning to build knowledge systematically. This framework breaks down complex mathematical concepts into smaller,
manageable steps, ensuring every child can develop a confident, thorough understanding. Each lesson is crafted to support students in connecting ideas, practicing skills, and applying knowledge across different areas of Maths.
The Mastery Approach
Our Mastery approach is designed to help every child achieve fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. We believe that every child has the potential to excel in Maths with the right support and resources. By focusing on key concepts in depth, students are encouraged to “master” each area before moving on. This ensures they not only learn the ‘how’ but understand the ‘why’ behind every concept, laying a strong foundation for future learning.
Key Components of Our Maths Approach
• Fluency: Students gain confidence through repeated practice, ensuring they have a solid command of fundamental skills and processes.
• Reasoning: Lessons encourage students to think critically, articulate their reasoning, and make connections across different mathematical ideas
• Problem Solving: By working on real-life problems and open-ended questions, students learn to apply their knowledge creatively and adaptively.
Our Maths curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, designed to meet each student where they are while challenging them to achieve their full potential. We are proud to nurture a love for Maths in our students, equipping them with skills and confidence that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
